Candace Needs Your Help for Surgeries

UPDATE
Candace Chantel Battiste was born on June 18, 1999 with Giant Congenital Nevus, a very rare skin disorder.

One in more than 200,000 babies is born with a nevus of this considerable size and located on the face. To date, Candace has had ten surgical procedures to remove the potentially cancerous skin from her face. This precious child is in need of many additional surgeries to complete the removal of the remaining nevus and to correct disfigurement of her eye, nose, and mouth.

Candace is scheduled for the next round of surgeries to begin in June 2008 by a team of outstanding surgeons at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Thereafter, two surgeries a year are tentatively scheduled until she turns thirteen years of age.

The family needs more than $10,000 per surgery to continue young Candace's surgery schedule. The goal is to raise $277,839 to defray costs of the hospital operating room fees which are partially covered by the family's health insurance.

Anesthesiologist fees, travel expenses from New York to Chicago, and accommodations for Candace's ten day post-operative stay in Chicago are not covered.

This family is in continued need of your help.

Update
4.19.09
Candace continues to heal from her last surgery; October 2008 in Chicago. Dr. Bauer was able to remove a bit more nevus from under her right eye. He did some scar removal, revision of her lower lip, eyebrow, cheek, and nostril. He corrected what gravity was doing to her left eyelid.

The eye no longer pulls downward and is in better proportion to the other. There continues to be frequent "leaking" due to some issues with the tear duct, however, we are grateful to the amazing improvements from these last two surgeries. Candace had an eye examination and she has received a script for corrective lenses. She complained of blurred vision and inability to see the Smart Board clearly.

UPDATE:
10.23.08-

Dr. Bruce Bauer is a brilliant surgeon who did an amazing amount of revision and nevus removal on October 14, 2008. Candace took it all in stride and is very happy to be completed with this round of surgery. We will head back to New York where she will complete recovery then return to school after an extended summer recess. From our family to you, we wish you much love and gratitude.

9.19.08-

Candace's July surgery was successful. Two skin expanders were surgically implanted in her face; forehead and left cheek. We will return to Chicago for part two of the surgery on October 13, 2008. Candace and our family are grateful.

Due to aggressive fund raising campaigns and generous donations, Candace will be undergoing the next surgery on July 29, 2008 in Chicago.* Abundant gratitude!

WHAT'S THE STORY

Candace is a very special little girl who is
very much like other children. She loves to

rope and dance. Some day, she wants to become
a fashion model like her friend, Tyra.

Nine-year-old Candace was born with a very special birthmark called a Giant Congenital Nevus.

This condition is very rare and frightens many children away from her before they even get to know what a lovely friend she can be. Candace explains, in her own way, what her world is like. See what it is like to be a real friend in this adventure of a day in the life of a child as seen through the eyes of a little girl who was born with a Nevus on her face.
